Jérôme Boateng was one of Bayern Munich’s most important defenders of the 2010s. He joined in 2011 and became a cornerstone of a dominant era, combining strength, recovery pace, composure, and elite long-range passing from centre-back. At his best, he gave Bayern both defensive authority and the ability to start attacks from deep. He was a major part of the 2013 treble-winning side and also featured in the 2020 Champions League-winning team, finishing his spell with multiple Bundesliga titles and two European Cups. Boateng was not always flashy, but in peak years he was one of Bayern’s most complete and influential defenders.
