Louis van Gaal managed Barcelona in two spells (1997–2000, 2002–03) and left a mixed but hugely influential legacy. In his first stint he imposed strict structure, positional discipline, and a faith in youth, and he won two La Liga titles (1997–98, 1998–99) plus a Copa del Rey (1997–98). He also brought in and backed a strong Dutch core (notably Rivaldo, plus several Dutch internationals) and promoted young players, but clashed with parts of the squad and the Camp Nou pressure. His second spell was short and ended with poor results and dismissal in early 2003.
