Ronaldinho and Messi’s Barcelona overlap was short but hugely important. Ronaldinho arrived in 2003 and transformed Barça’s mood and style, becoming the team’s superstar and leader. When Messi broke into the first team in 2004–05, Ronaldinho helped protect him, encouraged him, and gave him space to grow. Their signature moment came in May 2005: Messi scored his first Barcelona goal after a perfectly weighted Ronaldinho chip-pass over the defence. As Ronaldinho began to decline after 2006, Messi rose fast, taking on more responsibility and eventually becoming the club’s main man. In a real way, Ronaldinho handed Messi the torch.
