Ayr United’s 1960s were a proper yo-yo decade. They finished bottom of Division One in 1960–61 and dropped into Division Two. The early 60s featured the tail-end of Peter Price’s astonishing spell (club record 213 goals in 251 games, leaving in 1962). After several mid-to-lower Division Two finishes, Ayr hit a high in 1965–66, winning Division Two to go up—only to finish bottom of Division One in 1966–67 and go straight back down. They climbed again in 1968–69, finishing second and earning promotion. The era’s showpiece at Somerset: the record crowd 25,225 vs Rangers (Sept 1969).
