Australia vs Uruguay in 2005 was release, revenge, and one of the biggest nights in Australian sport. Four years after Uruguay had ended their World Cup dream, the Socceroos got them again in the 2006 World Cup inter-confederation play-off. Uruguay won the first leg 1–0 in Montevideo, then Australia won the second leg 1–0 in Sydney through Mark Bresciano, levelling the tie at 1–1 on aggregate. After extra time, Australia won the shootout 4–2, with Mark Schwarzer saving two penalties and John Aloisi scoring the decisive kick. It sent Australia to their first World Cup since 1974, which is why that night feels almost sacred in Australian football history.
