Aston Villa 1981–82 is the club’s greatest season. Managed by Tony Barton, Villa won the European Cup, beating Bayern Munich 1–0 in the final in Rotterdam. With goalkeeper Jimmy Rimmer injured early, deputy Nigel Spink starred, and Peter Withe scored the winning goal. The squad was built on discipline, organisation, and big-game nerve—very much a team over stars. Villa went on to add the European Super Cup in 1982, cementing their place among Europe’s elite. It remains the high-water mark in the club’s history.
