The 1980–81 League Cup was won by Aston Villa, capping off the start of a golden era. Managed by Ron Saunders, Villa beat Nottingham Forest 2–1 in the final at Wembley. Goals from Gordon Cowans and Gary Shaw sealed the win. The trophy was a crucial building block: Villa went on to win the First Division title that same season and the European Cup in 1982, making this League Cup a key moment in club history.
