Nigel Winterburn was Arsenal’s ultra-consistent left-back from 1987 to 2000, a key pillar of the famous back four. Tough, positionally sharp, and quietly brave, he combined old-school defending with a calm left foot—rarely diving in, rarely getting rattled. Winterburn was excellent at defending the far post, reading crosses early, and keeping the line compact with Adams, Bould and Dixon. He also delivered quality set pieces and penalties, and you could trust him in high-pressure moments. Winterburn won three league titles (1989, 1991, 1998), two FA Cups (1993, 1998), the League Cup (1993) and the 1994 Cup Winners’ Cup. A proper Highbury stalwart.
