Sol Campbell was Arsenal’s powerhouse centre-back from 2001 to 2009 (with a short return in 2010): fast, strong, dominant in the air, and a leader in big games. His free transfer from Tottenham made him instantly controversial, but on the pitch he became a cornerstone of Wenger’s best side. Campbell was crucial to the 2001–02 Double and the 2003–04 Invincibles, combining old-school defending with the athleticism to hold a high line. His defining Arsenal moment is scoring in the 2006 Champions League final against Barcelona—Arsenal’s first-ever goal in a European Cup final. An elite defender at his peak, and a major part of Arsenal’s modern history.
