Messi’s early years with Argentina were a mix of hype, setbacks, and slow acceptance. He debuted for the senior team in 2005, but his first major tournament, the 2006 World Cup, saw him used sparingly despite obvious talent. At Copa América 2007 he shone at times, yet Argentina lost the final to Brazil and the pressure on him grew. For years he was compared to Maradona and judged by trophies, while frequent coaching changes affected the team’s identity. By the early 2010s he was clearly Argentina’s best player, but big wins still slipped away—setting up the later redemption arc.
