    Dick Campbell’s Arbroath spell (March 2016–Nov 2023) is one of the great modern Scottish football stories. Appointed in March 2016, he rebuilt a part-time squad into serial winners: League Two champions 2016–17 and League One champions 2018–19, taking the Lichties into the Championship. From there, Arbroath stayed competitive and in 2021–22 pushed for Premiership promotion right to the end, narrowly missing out and earning Campbell the Scottish Championship Manager of the Year award. He stepped down in November 2023 after a Scottish Cup exit, leaving a legacy of overachievement at Gayfield.
