Rhys McCabe joined Airdrieonians as a player in 2021, then was appointed player-manager on 26 May 2022 after Ian Murray left. He quickly built momentum: Airdrie won promotion to the Scottish Championship in May 2023 via the play-offs (clinched on penalties vs Hamilton). In March 2024 he delivered silverware, beating The New Saints 2–1 to lift the SPFL Trust Trophy. The club later noted he’d been part of a record 25-game unbeaten league run, before stepping down on 15 Aug 2025.
