Marco van Basten was one of AC Milan’s greatest strikers and the star of the club’s late-1980s golden era. Milan’s Hall of Fame says he won 2 European Cups, 3 Serie A titles, 2 UEFA Super Cups, and 2 Intercontinental Cups with the club. What made him special was not just finishing. Van Basten combined elegance, intelligence, movement, aerial power, and spectacular technique, which made him far more than a classic penalty-box No. 9. He was central to Arrigo Sacchi’s great Milan side and scored twice in the 1989 European Cup final against Steaua București, one of the defining performances of that era. His Milan career was shortened badly by ankle injuries, but at his peak he was one of the best forwards in football history.
