Thiago Silva was one of AC Milan’s classiest modern defenders. Signed from Fluminense in December 2008, he had to wait until the 2009–10 season to debut, but Milan say that period let him learn from Paolo Maldini, which helped shape him into a top-class centre-back. He combined Brazilian technique with tactical discipline and formed an outstanding partnership with Alessandro Nesta. Milan’s official legends page credits him with 119 matches and 6 goals, and club coverage from the time presents him as the natural successor to Maldini in defence. Thiago Silva was central to Milan’s 2010–11 Serie A title side and remains remembered as one of the club’s most elegant and reliable defenders of the modern era.
