Franco Baresi was AC Milan’s defensive symbol and one of the greatest centre-backs in football history. Milan’s official Hall of Fame says he joined the first team as a teenager in 1977–78, stayed loyal through every phase of the club’s history, and retired with 719 official matches. As captain, he led Milan’s great late-1980s and early-1990s side under Arrigo Sacchi and Fabio Capello to six Serie A titles, three European Cups, two Intercontinental Cups, and four Italian Super Cups. Milan also retired his number 6 shirt, which says everything about his status. He was defined by positioning, anticipation, composure, and leadership rather than size or flash. Milan now also lists him as the club’s Honorary Vice-President, which shows how central he still is to Rossoneri identity.
