AC Milan’s 2007 Champions League win was all about redemption. Two years after the painful 2005 final defeat to Liverpool, Milan beat the same opponents 2–1 in the final in Athens on 23 May 2007 to lift their seventh European Cup/Champions League. Filippo Inzaghi scored both Milan goals, the first from an Andrea Pirlo free-kick that deflected in, and the second after a clever through ball from Kaká. Dirk Kuyt pulled one back late for Liverpool, but Milan held on. UEFA and Milan’s own records both frame it as revenge completed, while the route there also included big knockout wins over Bayern Munich and Manchester United.
