Aberdeen’s Cup Winners’ Cup triumph in 1983 is one of the greatest achievements in British club football. Alex Ferguson’s side beat Real Madrid 2–1 after extra time in the final in Gothenburg on 11 May 1983. Eric Black scored early, Madrid equalised through Juanito’s penalty, then John Hewitt won it in extra time. What makes it so iconic is not just the result, but the route: Aberdeen also knocked out Bayern Munich on the way to the final. It was Aberdeen’s first European trophy, and UEFA notes they followed it by winning the 1983 Super Cup too.
