Alvin Martin was a cornerstone of West Ham United from the late 1970s through the mid-1990s. A tough, intelligent centre-back, he made over 500 appearances for the club and became one of its most respected captains. He was central to West Ham’s 1980 FA Cup win and also helped them win promotion from the Second Division in 1981. Martin combined defensive grit with leadership and consistency, and he was admired for his loyalty during both highs and lows. He also had the rare distinction of scoring a hat-trick against three different goalkeepers in one game, a uniquely memorable West Ham moment.
