John Lyall was one of the most important managers in West Ham United history. Calm, dignified, and deeply respected, he led the club through one of its greatest eras after succeeding Ron Greenwood. Under Lyall, West Ham won the FA Cup in 1975 and again in 1980, when they famously beat Arsenal as a Second Division side. He also guided the club to promotion in 1981 and oversaw the brilliant 1985–86 team that finished third in the top flight. Lyall embodied loyalty, stability, and class, and for many supporters he remains one of the defining figures in West Ham’s story.
