John Barnes was one of Watford’s greatest ever players. Signed as a teenager in 1981, he became a key part of Graham Taylor’s brilliant 1980s side, helping Watford finish 2nd in the First Division in 1982–83 and reach the 1984 FA Cup final. A quick, skilful left winger, Barnes gave Watford flair, creativity and attacking threat. His performances earned him England recognition before he later moved to Liverpool in 1987. Though he achieved his biggest honours elsewhere, Watford was where Barnes first became a star.
