Alexi Lalas was one of the most recognizable figures in United States men’s national team history. A hard-tackling center back with his long hair and red goatee, he became a symbol of the 1994 World Cup generation. Lalas earned 96 caps and scored 9 goals for the USMNT from 1991 to 1998. He played every U.S. match at the 1994 World Cup and was also part of the 1998 squad. Beyond his play, he helped give American soccer a bigger public identity during a key growth period. He was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2006.
