Thomas Dooley was one of the most important defenders in United States men’s national team history during the 1990s. Born and raised in Germany, he became eligible for the U.S. through his American father and debuted for the USMNT in 1992. He earned 81 caps and scored 7 goals, bringing top-level European experience and calm leadership to a growing program. Dooley played in the 1994 and 1998 World Cups, was named U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year in 1993, and captained the team in France in 1998. He was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2010.
