Toby Alderweireld was the calm, elite passer at the heart of Spurs’ best modern defence. Joining from Atlético (after a Southampton loan) in 2015, he quickly formed a world-class centre-back partnership with Jan Vertonghen, giving Tottenham a rock-solid base during the Pochettino peak years. Alderweireld was brilliant at reading danger early, winning duels without fuss, and—crucially—hitting those laser long diagonals to flip play and launch attacks. He was central to the 2016–17 title push and the 2019 Champions League run. He left in 2021 with 200+ appearances and genuine “Spurs great” status.
