Graeme Souness was one of Scotland’s defining midfielders of the late 1970s/early 1980s: aggressive, vocal, and technically sharp. He won 54 caps between 1974 and 1984, scoring 4 goals, and often operated as the team’s tempo-setter and enforcer in the middle of the pitch. He featured at World Cup 1978 and World Cup 1982, bringing the same edge and leadership he showed at club level. Although Scotland’s tournament runs fell short of expectations in that era, Souness was widely seen as a big-game personality—an organiser who raised intensity and demanded standards.
