Scotland’s 2007–08 story is basically the Euro 2008 qualifying “nearly”. In a brutal Group B, Alex McLeish’s side produced famous highs—most notably beating France twice, including the iconic France 0–1 Scotland in Paris (12 Sept 2007) via James McFadden’s screamer. Scotland went into the final stretch with a real shot at qualification, but it ended at Hampden on 17 Nov 2007, losing 1–2 to Italy, which confirmed Scotland would finish 3rd behind Italy and France. McLeish resigned days later and George Burley was appointed in January 2008.
