Graeme Souness is one of the most transformative figures in the history of Rangers F.C.. Appointed player-manager in 1986, Souness revolutionised Rangers and laid the foundations for the club’s dominance of Scottish football in the 1990s. His arrival was a statement of intent. A European Cup-winning captain with Liverpool, Souness brought a new level of professionalism, ambition and international prestige to Ibrox. He attracted high-profile signings such as Terry Butcher, Chris Woods and later Mark Hateley, helping Rangers compete at a level rarely seen in Scotland at the time. Under Souness, Rangers won three consecutive league titles between 1989 and 1991, ending years of frustration and beginning the famous Nine-in-a-Row era that would later be completed under Walter Smith. As a player, Souness also led by example, bringing drive, leadership and world-class quality to the midfield. Many supporters view him as the architect of modern Rangers. His vision transformed the club’s culture, raised expectations and re-established Rangers as a dominant force in British football. For that reason, Graeme Souness remains one of the most influential and respected figures ever associated with Ibrox.
