John McGovern was the on-field leader of Brian Clough’s greatest Nottingham Forest side: a tireless, team-first central midfielder who captained Forest through their late-1970s/early-1980s peak. Signed by Clough in 1975, he became long-term club captain and lifted the European Cup in 1979 and 1980, alongside domestic honours including the 1977–78 First Division title and League Cups in 1978 and 1979.
