Trevor Francis was Nottingham Forest’s first “statement signing” under Brian Clough: he arrived from Birmingham City in 1979 for £1 million (Britain’s first million-pound player) and repaid it immediately. His defining Forest moment was scoring the winning header in the 1979 European Cup final against Malmö, finishing a John Robertson cross to make it 1–0. Primarily a quick, intelligent forward who could also play wide, he helped Forest compete at the very top in Clough’s peak years before later spells at Manchester City and beyond. He also later returned to Forest as manager in the 1990s.
