Nottingham Forest’s 1977–78 First Division season is the classic “promoted and champions” story. Back in the top flight after promotion, Brian Clough (with Peter Taylor) built an intense, defensively elite side and won Forest’s first-ever league title, finishing seven points clear of Liverpool. Forest’s league record was 42 games: 25 wins, 14 draws, 3 defeats (64 points in the 2-points-for-a-win era), scoring 69 and conceding just 24 (best defence in the division). Key early-season moves included signing Peter Shilton (then a record fee for a goalkeeper) and Archie Gemmill. They also completed the League + League Cup double, beating Liverpool in the 1978 League Cup final replay.
