Gerry Armstrong (born 1954) was a key Northern Ireland striker of the late 1970s and 1980s, winning 63 caps and scoring 12 goals (1977–1986). His defining moment came at the 1982 World Cup in Spain: Armstrong scored the 47th-minute winner vs hosts Spain in Valencia, one of Northern Ireland’s most iconic results, and he finished the tournament with three goals. He also scored a crucial winner against Israel in 1981 that helped book Northern Ireland’s place at the finals. He later served as Northern Ireland assistant manager and worked for many years as a Spanish-football pundit/commentator.
