The “Tonali Wetherspoons” story is basically a Newcastle dressing-room wind-up that went viral in summer 2023. Soon after signing, Tonali asked teammates for good places to eat in the area, and (jokingly) they pointed him toward Wetherspoons as if it was the height of sophistication. He either booked or turned up at a local Spoons, and photos/banter spread fast online. Tonali later laughed about it publicly, saying he wasn’t exactly expecting that outcome and it became a running joke among the squad.
