Joelinton’s Newcastle story is basically a reinvention. Signed from Hoffenheim in July 2019 for a club-record fee reported around £40m, he arrived as a No.9 but initially struggled to justify the price tag. Under Eddie Howe, he was shifted into midfield and turned into a fan favourite: all-action pressing, ball-winning, driving carries, and a proper physical presence alongside Bruno Guimarães. That role change flipped his reputation from “flop” to key starter. In April 2024, Newcastle rewarded him with a new long-term contract.
