Newcastle United’s 1998–99 season was a mixed bag. A poor start saw Kenny Dalglish sacked in August and Ruud Gullit take over, but the league form stayed mid-table: 13th in the Premier League with 46 points (11W-13D-14L). In Europe, their only Cup Winners’ Cup adventure ended in the first round. The high point was the FA Cup run—they reached the final at Wembley but lost 2–0 to Manchester United. Alan Shearer led the scoring with 21 goals in all competitions (14 in the league).
