Pogba and José Mourinho started off aligned in 2016—Mourinho pushed hard for Pogba’s return and built the team around him—but the relationship steadily soured into a very public power struggle. Mourinho questioned Pogba’s consistency and leadership in the media, while Pogba’s body language and comments were constantly analysed. The big rupture came in September 2018: Pogba was stripped of the vice-captaincy, then filmed in a tense training-ground exchange after the Derby loss, reportedly triggered by an Instagram post Mourinho felt was disrespectful. From there Pogba was in and out of the XI until Mourinho was sacked in December 2018.
