Sir Matt Busby is the architect of Manchester United as a global giant. He managed United from 1945–1969 (and briefly 1970–71), building the famous “Busby Babes” and pioneering youth-driven, attacking football. After the 1958 Munich air disaster, Busby (himself seriously injured) rebuilt the club almost from scratch, turning tragedy into a long-term mission. The crowning moment was 1968, when United won their first European Cup, making Busby the first manager of an English club to lift it—an achievement that defined United’s identity for decades.
