Tommy Smith was Liverpool’s original hard man — a fearless centre-back whose toughness was matched by big-game impact. Playing from 1962–1978, he became a defensive leader under Shankly and then Paisley, known for crunching tackles, dominance in the air, and total commitment. His most famous moment is scoring in the 1977 European Cup final against Borussia Mönchengladbach, helping Liverpool win their first European Cup. Smith also captained Liverpool at times and was a key figure in the club’s rise to domestic and European power, winning multiple league titles and cups. Nicknamed “The Anfield Iron,” he embodied that era’s grit.
