Steve McMahon at Liverpool (1985–1991) was the archetypal “midfield general”: fierce in the tackle, ruthless in pressing, and a relentless organiser who set standards every week. Signed from Everton, he quickly became a leader and later captain, driving Kenny Dalglish’s sides with intensity and simple, sharp distribution. He was central to Liverpool’s late-80s dominance, winning three league titles (1985–86, 1987–88, 1989–90) and two FA Cups (1986, 1989), often doing the hard yards behind the flair of Barnes, Beardsley and Aldridge. Not flashy—just hard, loud, and decisive.
