Paul Ince at Liverpool (1997–1999) was a short, slightly awkward chapter: a big-name midfielder brought in for experience and edge as the club tried to climb back toward the top. He played mainly as a combative central midfielder—organising, snapping into tackles, and trying to impose authority—sometimes wearing the captain’s armband. There were flashes of quality (sharp passing, leadership, big-match mentality), but the fit never fully felt “Liverpool,” and injuries plus inconsistency meant he didn’t become the midfield cornerstone hoped for. After two seasons, he left for Middlesbrough in 1999.
