Ray Clemence was Liverpool’s “safe hands” across their first great European Cup era, starting all three winning finals: 1977 (Rome): Liverpool beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 3–1. Clemence made key saves after Borussia’s equaliser, helping Liverpool regain control and close it out. 1978 (Wembley): Liverpool won 1–0 vs Club Brugge. Late on, Clemence blocked a big chance after a defensive mix-up, with Liverpool surviving to retain the trophy. 1981 (Paris): Liverpool beat Real Madrid 1–0, Clemence’s last Liverpool game—another composed display and clean sheet in a tight final. He also played a huge part en route to Wembley in 1978, including crucial penalty saves in the earlier rounds.
