Matt Gillies was one of the most important managers in Leicester City history, leading the club from November 1958 to November 1968. Under him, Leicester became a major force of the early 1960s, reaching the FA Cup final in 1961 and 1963, winning the League Cup in 1964, and finishing fourth in the First Division in 1962–63, their best post-war league finish until the title win of 2015–16. He also helped develop outstanding players such as Gordon Banks, Peter Shilton, and Frank McLintock. Gillies gave Leicester ambition, identity, and one of the club’s strongest pre-modern eras.
