At Leeds United, Cantona’s spell was short but huge. He joined in early 1992 from France and instantly added swagger and creativity to a talented side under Howard Wilkinson. He helped Leeds hold their nerve in the run-in and win the last First Division title in 1991–92 (the season before the Premier League began). But the relationship didn’t last. Early in the new Premier League season, tensions and tactical fit issues grew, and Leeds sold him to Manchester United in November 1992—one of the most consequential transfers in English football history.
