The 1964–65 season was the most historic in Kilmarnock’s history, as they won the Scottish Division One title — the only top-flight league championship the club has ever achieved. Under manager Willie Waddell, Kilmarnock secured the title by beating Heart of Midlothian 2–0 on the final day, winning on goal average in one of the closest finishes in British league history. Killie also reached the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup and competed in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.
