Alan Gordon had only a short spell at Hibernian, from 1972 to 1974, but it was a very productive one. Hibs signed him from Dundee United, and at Easter Road he enjoyed the best period of his career, scoring 51 league goals in 84 league appearances. He helped Hibs win the Scottish League Cup in 1972–73 and the Drybrough Cup in 1972 and 1973. He was also part of the side that beat Hearts 7–0 on New Year’s Day 1973, scoring the second and seventh goals in one of the most famous Edinburgh derbies. Gordon was a classic centre-forward: intelligent, clinical, and especially strong in the air.
