Hibs’ 2007–08 campaign was a rollercoaster. John Collins’ side began the SPL unbeaten, including statement wins over Celtic (3–2) and Rangers (1–0) that briefly took them top. A long winless run followed, and Collins resigned on 20 December 2007. Mixu Paatelainen arrived in January and sparked a late surge, but Hibs finished 6th on 52 points, earning an Intertoto place while missing the UEFA Cup spots. Cup form was modest: Scottish Cup exit in the fifth round and League Cup exit in the third. Steven Fletcher led the scoring with 14 goals, with Zemmama and Shiels often providing the spark.
