Paul Hartley’s Hearts spell (2003–Jan 2007) was the peak of his club career: a high-output midfielder who mixed goals, bite and big moments. Signed on a free from St Johnstone in summer 2003, he became the heartbeat of the side that pushed near the top end of the SPL and went on notable European runs. His defining chapter was 2005–06: he hit a hat-trick vs Hibs in the Scottish Cup semi-final and (despite being sent off late in the final) was part of the team that won the 2006 Scottish Cup on penalties against Gretna. He left for Celtic in January 2007.
