George Burley’s Hearts spell was brief, but it was one of the most dramatic managerial runs in the club’s modern history. Appointed in June 2005, he built an exciting side that won its first eight SPL matches and went unbeaten in its first 10 league games, putting Hearts top of the table and briefly making a title challenge look real. They even beat Rangers 1–0 during that run. Burley then left on 22 October 2005 after “irreconcilable differences” with the board, despite Hearts still being unbeaten in the league under him. His time was short, but it helped shape a remarkable 2005–06 season that ended with Hearts finishing second and winning the Scottish Cup.
