Wayne Rooney’s “Ford car” incident happened in 2004, just before his move to Manchester United. After a training session with Everton, Rooney crashed his £30,000 Ford Ka into a lamppost in Liverpool while speeding. He was fined by the club and banned from driving for two years after admitting the offence in court. The story became famous because of the contrast: Rooney was one of the hottest young players in world football, yet driving a small Ford and getting into trouble like a normal teenager. It added to his early “rough edges” reputation, just months before becoming a global superstar.
