Brian Labone was Everton’s elegant, no-nonsense centre-half and long-time captain, a rare one-club man (1958–71) with 451 league appearances and 534 overall. He anchored the title sides of 1962–63 and 1969–70 and famously lifted the FA Cup in 1966 after the comeback win over Sheffield Wednesday at Wembley Stadium. With England national football team he won 26 caps and played at the 1970 FIFA World Cup. Manager Harry Catterick dubbed him “the last of the Corinthians” for his sportsmanship—reportedly booked only twice.
