Ray Wilkins for England was calm authority in midfield. He was not a flamboyant game-breaker, but a player who gave the team order, rhythm, and technical security, always seeming to have an extra second on the ball. Across 84 caps between 1976 and 1986, he became one of England’s most trusted midfielders, captaining the side 10 times and playing at Euro 1980 plus the 1982 and 1986 World Cups. He also scored one of England’s most memorable tournament goals with that lob against Belgium at Euro 1980. Wilkins’s England legacy is intelligence, composure, and understated class.
