Des Walker for England was speed, calm, and elite one-on-one defending. He won 59 caps between 1988 and 1993 and became one of the key defenders of Bobby Robson’s final England side. He started throughout the 1990 World Cup, where England reached the semi-finals, and his game stood out because it was built less on crunching tackles than on recovery pace, positioning, and the ability to smother strikers in open space. He was not a grandstanding defender; he made hard defending look clean and simple. Walker’s England legacy is slightly underrated: a top-class centre-back whose best international level was very high.
